In today’s episode, David and Amber will be talking with the Diabetes Dad, Tom Karlya.
Tom has been active in diabetes causes since his daughter, Kaitlyn, was diagnosed in 1992 at the age of two. His son Rob was also diagnosed in March of 2009 at the age of thirteen. He is the Co-Creator of www.GetDiabetesRight.org, a site dedicated to supplying communities with information about the warning signs of diabetes. He has lectured internationally at numerous health professional conferences including; The American Association of Diabetes Educators, The Pediatric Endocrinology Nurses Society, The National School Nurses Association, JDRF’s Type One Summit, The International Diabetes Federation Conference, Children with Diabetes Friends for Life Conferences in the UK and the US.
He played a pivotal role in passing legislation in the United States regarding the awareness of the missed diagnosis of diabetes. He has also been instrumental advising a national initiative with the Beyond Type1 Foundation that has established awareness and education programs both in the US and abroad. He was awarded two Telly Awards in the Health Category for his video on the missed diagnosis of T1D which he wrote and produced, and also 14 other Telly Awards for various diabetes media outlets.
